Flash flood in Island of Jersey

A clear-up operation is under way after Jersey was hit by flash-flooding. Several roads were left under up to 3-ft of water as torrential rain fell on the Island around Saturday lunchtime.

The worst hit areas were St Ouen and St Peter, particularly St Peter's Valley. There were a number of landslides in the area and the road through the valley was left strewn with rocks and branches. The States police closed the road running from St Ouen's Village to St Peter's Village after it suffered what they described as 'extreme flooding'. One Islander was also seen wake boarding down the road. The roads at the bottom of Greve de Lecq hill were also flooded. A St Ouen resident said: 'It was a complete and utter downpour. The worst area - outside St Ouen's Manor - was under 2-ft to 3-ft of water. 'Only four-wheel drive cars could get through. Traffic was backed up a long way - it caused complete chaos.'
